Rui Duarte Botelho Moreira Braga
1953 Born in Lisbon on April 16.

1966 As a teenager, begins his first drawing studies with the painter Miguel Arruda.

1972 Takes a free drawing course with the sculptor Hélder Baptista to prepare for admission to the Painting Course at ESBAL.
Enters the Painting Department of the Escola Superior de Belas Artes de Lisboa, later transferring to the Department of Architecture.

1978 Completes a degree in Architecture with the grade of Good.
Scholarship holder of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
Member of the National Society of Fine Arts (SNBA), the Association of Portuguese Architects (AAP) – later member 1168 of the Order of Architects – and the International Union of Architects (UIA.)
Develops his activity as a painter and as an architect, specializing in this area in residential projects and collective facilities – auditoriums, cinemas/theatres and churches -.

ACTIVITY AS A PAINTER

1986 Resumes activity in the area of painting.
Participates in the group painting exhibition “Salão Convívio” at SNBA.

1987 Participates in the group painting exhibition “Prémio Malhoa” at SNBA.
Is admitted as a beneficiary of the Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores (SPA).

1988/89 Develops various pictorial works about historical and architectural heritage, whose prints are promoted by the Instituto Português do Património Arquitetónico (IPPAR) and by the Instituto Português de Museus (IPM).

Carries out painting commissions for “Aldeia do Golfe” and “Golférias” in Vilamoura, Cortal, Sa., Interdarte, Lda., Sofinloc Sa., the restaurant “Páginas Tantas” (Bairro Alto), and various private collections.

Stay in England to execute a commission about “LLOYD’S OF LONDON” (screenprint edition produced at António Inverno’s studio).

1990 Commission from CORREIOS DE PORTUGAL to create the 5 commemorative stamps for the “Centenary of Rossio Station”.

Solo painting show at the Palácio Nacional da Pena, on the theme “A Cor do Património” (with sponsorship from the Instituto Português do Património Cultural, Interdarte, Lda., Sofinloc, Sa., Companhia de Seguros Fidelidade, and Enatur – Empresa Nacional de Turismo EP.)

Solo painting exhibition at the Galeria de Arte dos CTT, at Fórum Picoas, titled “Estação Central”.

Commissioned by CP – Caminhos de Ferro Portugueses, for screenprint editions (produced at António Inverno’s studio), and acquisition of the originals related to the locomotives and Rossio Station, included in the commemorative stamp edition of “100 Anos da Estação Central”.

Commissioned by the Lisbon City Council, the Sintra City Council, and the Serpa City Council, for prints of pictorial works produced about the municipality’s historical and architectural heritage.

1991 Commission by the Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores for a canvas featuring SPA headquarters within its urban surroundings.

1992 Is represented by the Tsukushi Art Gallery of Tokyo, exporting originals and exclusive screenprints to Japan.

1993 Commission of pictorial works and production of prints by the Seixal City Council to promote the Cultural Forum and Tourist Office.

Assigns copyright to the Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil for the use of reproductions of paintings about Lisbon on the covers of the 3 brochures for the international EUROCK 93 congress.

1994 The Elvas City Council commissions paintings surveying the most significant historical/architectural heritage and their reproduction in prints for promotion at the Tourist Office.

1995 Retrospective painting exhibition at the Galeria de Arte do Alvito. The Alvito City Council and the Pousada do Castelo do Alvito commission prints to promote the municipality’s historical/architectural heritage.

Participation in the Ibero-American Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture, organized by the Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores, which acquires original paintings and offers all international delegations a screenprint by the author.

1997 Exports reproductions of paintings made about Alentejo to Japan, commissioned by Mitsubishi Corporation, Nagoya branch.

1998 Solo painting exhibition at Fórum Picoas titled “Atelier Aberto”, presenting his trajectory in the acrylic technique.

2004 Commission for a panel with the Virgin and the Child Jesus (triptych 3.60×1.80m) for the Igreja da Serra, in the Diocese of Santarém. – mixed technique.

2005 Religious Art painting “As bodas de Canaan” 1.80×1.20m – mixed technique. Commission from the Parish of S. Vicente Paulo, Serafina neighborhood – Lisbon

2006/08 Preparing the thematic exhibition “Casablanca”, based on the film of the same name directed by Michael Curtiz (1942).

2011/19 – Devotes himself exclusively to painting, regularly participating in group exhibitions at the National Society of Fine Arts in Lisbon.

The prints, reproductions of original paintings focusing mainly on historical-architectural heritage, are marketed essentially to institutional clients and some reference shops:

2015 – Registers the national brand “Portugal Heritage Prints”, which sells its items through the online store on the website www.portugal-heritageprints.com, and is admitted as a member of ATL – Associação de Turismo de Lisboa.

2020 – Has an epiphany that inspires him to absorb compositions from nature and our everyday life, which he deconstructs and recreates, producing a line of figurative abstract art in which he explores his ability for chromatic control.

Prepares a solo abstract painting exhibition scheduled for the Art Gallery of the Museu da Luz.

Is invited by Editora Moderna of São Paulo, Brazil, to grant copyright for 2 themes from the series “O Auto da Barca do Inferno” for inclusion in the book “Identidade em Ação – Língua Portuguesa” by Thelma Carvalho Guimarães, commissioned by the Brazilian Ministry of Culture as a high school textbook.

2021 – Exhibits at the Art Gallery of the Museu da Luz “ALQUEVA – a Arte da Terra”, with the sponsorship of EDIA and the Museu da Luz.
Presents a line of abstract painting inspired by the banks washed by the waters of Alqueva, which reveal their “intimidades” when the reservoir level drops during the summer.

“Rua Direita / Monsaraz” – acrylic 0,90×0,60m

Passionate about Alentejo, where he spends long periods, he paints themes about its historical-architectural heritage.

2022 – Continues painting themes about Alentejo, preparing the exhibition “A Cor do Património”, scheduled for the Museu da Luz from November 18 to January 29, 2023. It has sponsorship from EDIA and the Museu da Luz.

2023 – Participation with his own stand at DECORHOTEL – Lisbon International Fair, October 26-28.

Registers the Duarte Botelho brand and logo

2024 – Prepares the solo painting exhibition “My Way – 50 anos de pintura” at the art gallery of Igreja de Santiago in Monsaraz, with the support of the Reguengos de Monsaraz City Council (August 10 to September 29, 2024).

Presents his works aimed at decoration in hospitality and cultural tourism, in an interview in Business and Science Networks magazine on the theme Tourism and Culture, coinciding with the Culture and Tourism Innovation Global Summit in Lisbon.
